ILYUSHIN IL-12 AND IL-14

IL-12 AND IL-14 (Red Star Vol. 25) by Yefim Gordon & Dmitriy Komissarov Work started in the autumn of 1943 on a 29-seat modern airliner designed to supersede the Lisunov Li-2. With its tricycle undercarriage, it represented quite an advance over the Soviet-built DC-3. Flight testing began in 1947 and the Il-12 was introduced to Aeroflot's international services in the following year. In all, some 600 were built for Aeroflot and the Soviet armed forces. The Il-14 was a development of the earlier aircraft. It featured a more efficient wing, improved flaps, a larger square vertical tail and 1900 hp ASh-82T engines. Production of the Il-14 commenced in 1953. The type was exported to China, Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland, as well as being built by VEB in East Germany and Avia in Czechoslovakia. The total production of more than 1,000 examples included 203 Avia 14s and Avia 14 Supers, the latter being a pressurized development. Besides being used as an airliner and a military transport, the types were employed as VIP aircraft, in Polar operations, for aerial photography and as testbeds. The book gives a detailed account of the design and development of both types. It also explains their important place in Soviet commercial aviation history. In common with the other titles in the successful Red Star series, this volume is based on research in Russian archives and is illustrated with numerous previously unseen photos and line drawings.
